TEACHING
Students benefit from having tangible, hands-on examples of the theory being taught in the classroom. Together with my background broadcasting and science communication, I encourage students to identify ways in which the material taught in class matters to their day-to-day lives. Whether it is a better understanding of how clouds form, statistics are employed to answer questions around climate change, or the limits of human thermal comfort in a city, each one is built upon atmospheric science and geography theories and principles that are taught in the classroom.
Every student is deserving of respect and appreciation. Regardless of the obstacles to their education, they are worthy of my time and dedication to aid in their development and progress toward their academic and professional goals. I seek to provide space and time for their questions and concerns to be heard and listened to with dignity.
Teaching in general education courses has taught me a lot about how to communication with the general public and to engage respectfully and gently with countering perspectives and seek to have a helpful conversation rather than a debate with a victor and a loser.

MENTORING
Students seeking to pursue higher degrees with me will have the opportunity to develop soft skills such as public speaking, science communication, and light computer programming. They will be expected to perform at a high level of rigour, developing their own opinions and ideas by extensively reading the literature and communicating their learned knowledge to myself and the rest of the lab. Further, students will gain the opportunity to be trained in the field as well as mentor others less advanced. This means that as they learn from me, they are also teaching others which strengthens their communication skills as well as people skills to take on positions in society where they can better supervise and/or work alongside those on their team.
